This chapter describes the monitoring and evaluation of public health surveillance systems, emphasizing the importance of ensuring they continue to meet their objectives most efficiently. Monitoring involves routine collection and analysis of indicators to measure how well the surveillance system is achieving its objectives, whereas evaluation includes the use of specific study designs to assess periodically the relevance, effectiveness, and the impact of the surveillance system. Both are essential for meeting key system objectives. Specific evaluation criteria are outlined and measures and tools suggested.
