Jonathan Edwards’s Life and Career: Society and Self
This chapter considers the personal Edwards from two vantage points: self and society. “Self” means what we can gather from what Edwards said about himself, or what others who knew him said about him. This is of course a tricky affair, since autobiography can present different “selves,” and contemporaries can be biased. “Society” comprehends the full round of engagement with others, including vocationally, economically, in family and in community. These public networks, grounded in events of the time, also go far towards helping us know the private Edwards.
