Edwards and Biblical Typology

Edwards and Biblical Typology

(p.91) 7 Edwards and Biblical Typology
Understanding Jonathan Edwards

Fabiny Tibor

Oxford University Press

Jonathan Edwards developed a highly original form of biblical typology (or figuralism). This chapter first defines what biblical typology means; then shows that Edwards’s famous sermon “The Excellency of Christ” is surprisingly similar to what he wrote about typology in his 1992 book—before he became aware of Edwards’s sermon. The chapter discusses Edwards’s view of beauty, which underlies his typology, and the uniqueness of Edwards’s typology. It highlights Edwards’s innovations in typology, showing how Edwards echoes Luther, Shakespeare, and the metaphysical poets, and speaks to the relevance of Edwards’s typology for the contemporary reader.
