This chapter presents a research that quantitatively explores the influences of a complex environment on pilots' problem-solving behavior when managing the flight path of a modern commercial airliner. The first step in understanding the influence of the problem-solving environment on pilots' behavior is to develop a detailed profile of the environment. The second step is to consider the environmental profile and hypothesize advantages and disadvantages of using each flight control resource to comply with each type of clearance with respect to each environmental dimension that was measured. The final step is to examine a record of the flight control resources chosen in response to each of the clearances issued during the same sixteen flights. The results suggest a process by which pilots repeatedly fly a particular flight route, extract a set of useful specifics about that flight route, and use this information to devise strategies that are tuned to the environmental demands. It is important to note that the statistical profiles of the two routes between San Francisco and Los Angeles are in no way claimed to be a general characterization of other flight routes.
