Facing the Music

Huib Schippers

Oxford University Press

The framework is brought to life by applying it to an environment that has a strong Western classical tradition, yet has tried to embrace cultural diversity in music education. Three recontextualized world music traditions in the highly multicultural environment of The Netherlands are examined in detail: African percussion in a community setting, Balinese gamelan as a vehicle to train music teachers, and North Indian classical music in the professional training of performers. Each is viewed from the perspective of issues of context, learning process, dimensions of interaction and approach to cultural diversity; this leads to a cross‐cultural perspective on enculturation processes of recontextualized music traditions.
