Big Time Dharma

(p.243) 6 Dharma over Time, I

Alf Hiltebeitel

Oxford University Press

This is the first of two chapters that treat comparatively usages where Buddhist and Brahmanical texts worked out themes of dharma over time in significantly different ways. Chapter 6 is about how the two traditions depicted dharma in relation to the big cosmological time units, beginning with the kalpa—in this case, probably in full awareness of what each other were doing, offering different chronometries tied to their different soteriologies, It also takes up the way that Dharma is worked into Brahmanical cosmogony and theogony in the Mahābhārata as a divinity, and addresses the more distinctively Brahmanical concepts of the yuga and the manvantara as they are developed primarily in the Mahābhārata and Manu. The Nārāyaṇīya section of the Mahābhārata is important to this chapter.
