Assessing sleep in infants and children is a challenging task and there are different methods to accomplish this undertaking. Each method has its advantages and limitations and the choice of methodology depends on: specific assessment goals or questions; the age of the child; and the availability of the equipment and knowledge required. This chapter presents the main sleep assessment methods: polysomnography, videosomnography, actigraphy, direct behavioral observations, sleep diaries, and questionnaires. In presenting the various sleep assessment methodologies, special emphasis is given to their advantages and limitations. The chapter discusses sleep assessment methodologies that require equipment with no reference to specific brand names or companies. It concludes with some discussion of how to choose the appropriate sleep assessment method.
