Engaged scholarship and qualitative methods can be used to adapt or modify an evidence-based practice (EBP). Implementation of a standardized measure or intervention must consider factors (e.g., organization, cultural, and client) that affect, in unanticipated ways, the relevance of a standardized intervention. Unintended or unanticipated implementation consequences refer to phenomenological practice gaps (PPGs), gaps between the proposed model and its implementation. The chapter illustrates how qualitative methods can be used to adapt an EBP to fit the particularities of open systems and their unique PPGs.

Keywords:   standardized intervention, evidence-based practice, phenomenological practice gaps, organizational factors, cultural factors, client factors
