This chapter discusses Gandhi’s increased importance in Congress after he played an important role during the events of 1919. He was considered a revered Indian and a new force in the country’s politics. It shows how Indian politics appeared to move in traditional grooves during the first years of the 1920s, and then goes on to examine the outrage at the atrocities committed in Punjab and the betrayal of the British in Turkey. It also studies the 4 September 1920 session of Congress and the first serious test of the non-cooperation movement after the session. Finally, the chapter discusses the changes that occurred in Indian politics from 1919 to 1920, and reveals that Gandhi was accused of heading a rebellion in India.
Keywords: Indian politics, Punjab atrocities, British betrayal, 4 September 1920, non-cooperation movement, Congress session
