Swaraj Within a Year
Swaraj Within a Year
This chapter takes a look at Gandhi’s claim that Swaraj could be achieved within a year, provided that his programme gained sufficient responses. It first examines the main argument that was made against the non-cooperation movement, that is, challenge the respect for law and the foundation of the State and society. It then discusses the start of the non-cooperation movement in 1920, which was focused on self-sacrifice. It further studies Gandhi’s promotion of khadi and boycott of foreign cloth. It also looks at the agrarian discontent that marked the post-war years, the risks involved in Gandhi’s campaign against foreign rule, the outbreaks of violence that occurred despite Gandhi’s warnings, and the difficulty in keeping the non-cooperation movement within the discipline of satyagraha.
Keywords: Swaraj, non-cooperation movement, self-sacrifice, promoting khadi, boycotting foreign cloth, agrarian discontent, foreign rule, outbreaks of violence, satyagraha
