The Alliance Under Strain

(p.80) Chapter 5 The Alliance Under Strain

B. R. Nanda

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses the weakening alliance of the Indian Muslims and the British Raj, which was based on the perceived common interests of the British officials and Muslim leaders. However, due to certain events in Turkey, immediately after the First World War, the opinions of the Indian Muslims changed and they became estranged from the government. It also examines the riot in Kanpur city, which occurred shortly after a rumour spread that part of the Machli Bazar Mosque was to be destroyed by the local government. The chapter also studies Aga Khan and Ameer Ali, two men responsible for the Anglo-Muslim alliance. They sensed a change in the Muslim community, which eventually affected the orientation of Muslim politics.
