This chapter studies Gandhi’s arrival in Wardha during the 1930s. It shows that it was Jamnalal who was responsible for persuading Gandhi to establish a branch of the Sabarmati Ashram at Wardha in 1921. Gandhi’s yearly visits to the ashram in Wardha were interrupted by the continuation of civil disobedience, the Salt Satyagraha, and the Round Table Conference, but certain events led to Gandhi’s settlement in Wardha in 1933. The discussion examines the changes in the Indian political landscape during this time, as well as Gandhi’s plans to revive the village industries. It notes that Wardha was transformed as the centre of Gandhi’s activities in 1935, and studies Gandhi’s visits to some of the nearby villages, where he talked to some workers who were part of the constructive programme. It also describes the circumstances that accidentally led Sevagram, previously known as Segaon, falling in Jamnalal’s possession.
