This chapter shows how Jamnalal ran the family businesses after the death of his grandfather and older brother, Madhav. It describes Jamnalal as a shrewd and intelligent businessman, although some of his ethical ideas and practices troubled his staff. It identifies his travels for his cotton business to Bombay and meetings with fellow businessmen who would supply him with ‘commercial intelligence’. The next section takes a look at Jamnalal’s efforts to expand and consolidate his businesses, as well as the start of his friendship with Srikrishnadas Jajoo. It is followed by a discussion of Jajoo’s college education, and compares it to Jamnalal’s lack of the same. The chapter also considers Jamnalal’s philanthropic and educational ventures, his friendship with Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, and the end of his business partnership with Seth Ramgopal.

Keywords:   business expansion, family businesses, philanthropic ventures, educational ventures, partnership, Srikrishnadas Jajoo, Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose
