This chapter discusses some of the low points Gandhi and his followers experienced during the non-cooperation movement and the civil disobedience campaign. It looks at the Chauri Chaura tragedy, which was the main reason why Gandhi stopped his plans for civil disobedience in Bardoli at the last minute. It reasons that Gandhi believed that this tragedy testified that the country’s atmosphere was too unpredictable for a mass movement. It shows that Gandhi explained that he stopped civil disobedience, but not satyagraha. The chapter also reveals Jamnalal’s concern over some of the practical dilemmas Congress faced, his staunch faith in Gandhi’s judgement, and the responsibilities the Working Committee placed on him.
Keywords: non-cooperation movement, civil disobedience campaign, Chauri Chaura tragedy, Bardoli, mass movement, satyagraha, Congress, practical dilemmas
