This chapter discusses the Maharashtrian youth, Vinoba Bhave, the son of a textile technologist. He was aged 20 when he travelled to the holy city of Banaras, where he began a very busy and strict life. This only ended when Vinoba became too repulsed by the poor sanitation in Banaras and the want of piety in the priests. It looks at Vinoba’s special relationship with Gandhi, his arrival in Wardha, and his appointment as head of the new Wardha Ashram in the city. It describes how Vinoba ran the Ashram, which was similar to the way the Sabarmati Ashram was run. The chapter also relates that Jamnalal considered Vinoba as a source of inspiration and comfort for him and his family. It then emphasizes that Vinoba and the Ashram would play an important part during periods of political inactivity.
Keywords: Vinoba Bhave, Banaras, Bhave and Gandhi, Wardha Ashram, political inactivity
