The Nagpur Flag Satyagraha

The Nagpur Flag Satyagraha

(p.96) 8 The Nagpur Flag Satyagraha
In Gandhi’s Footsteps

B. R. Nanda

This chapter discusses Jamnalal’s satyagraha campaign in his home province. This campaign was the idea of Pandit Sunderlal, the president of the Central Provinces Congress Committee. Several contrasting opinions were raised as the campaign spread in Nagpur, which included the Swarajists’ suspicions. They believed that this campaign was a cunning plot of the No-Changers to destroy their programme. The discussion then considers the issue of the flag satyagraha, and describes the events that led to Jamnalal’s first jail term along with Bhagwan Din and Vinoba Bhave. It shows that Jamnalal was unable to initiate the Nagpur satyagraha and that he was the only leader of national stature to be imprisoned. The chapter shows, however, that his brief stint in jail did not harm his business in any way; in fact, it raised his stock.
