This book takes its readers behind-the-scenes of India's nuclear programme and nuclear weapons policy. It examines four important periods in the history of India's nuclear behaviour, which started in the 1930s and continues until today. This book includes the April-May 1998 nuclear testing in India, an event that elicited strong negative reactions from the international community. It first examines the relationships between Indian society, state, and science, and then discusses the development of India's nuclear behaviour, nuclear policy, and the decision-making processes involved. The reactions, influences, and attitudes towards the country's nuclear policy are analysed. The final chapter of the book mainly discusses the consequences, debates, and reactions surrounding the then Prime Minister's decision to allow nuclear testing in the country.
