Mahatma Gandhi’s relationship with the Jews during his stay in South Africa is explored in this chapter. Some of his Jewish friends during this period included British lawyer–journalist Henry Polak, German architect Hermann Kallenbach, and Russian stenographer Sonia Schlesin. This chapter attempts to explain what attracted these European Jews who settled in South Africa to the strange, Hindu lawyer–politician–saint. It also argues that in recommending non-violence to the Jews rather than to the Arabs, Gandhi was not guilty of double standards because he evidently believed that he had more hopes of getting a response to such a call from the Jews than from the Arabs.
