(p.1) India’s Judicial Elite
Judges of the Supreme Court of India

George H. Gadbois, Jr

Oxford University Press

This chapter describes the book’s scope and methodology. The book attempts to do three things. First, it aims to provide a brief biographical essay for each of the ninety-three men who served on the Court from 1950 through mid-1989. Second, it attempts to account for why they were chosen as SCI judges and the selection criteria employed. Third, it paints a collective portrait of them, paying particular attention to changes in the background characteristics of the judges over the four decades. The biographical essays are written in who’s who form. Each can be read independently of the others. This chapter notes that an SCI judge must be an Indian citizen and must have served for at least five years as a high court judge, or have been for at least ten years a high court advocate, or be, ‘in the opinion of the President, a distinguished jurist.
