This chapter discusses the aims and approach of the book. The book deals with the psychological themes which pervade Indian childhood, and relates these themes to the traditions and institutions of culture and society in India. Kakar describes the emergence of these psychological themes out of the interplay between universal processes of human development and the Indian cultural milieu. The book also deals with culture and personality in Indian society and the author’s personal world in search for Indian identity.
