The Social Structure

The Social Structure

(p.64) Chapter 3 The Social Structure
The Kamar

S.C. Dube

Oxford University Press

This chapter studies the social structure of the Kamar tribes. It examines the two main divisions of the tribe, namely the Bundhrajiya and the Makadiya, the latter being the more inferior of the two. It also discusses the existing sub-divisions of the tribe, which are very territorial. It emphasizes that while the Kamars are mainly individualistic, they do realize the unity of the tribe as a different and distinct race. The following sections of the chapter examine the various units of the tribe, starting from the family, the local group, and the clans. The final part of the chapter discusses relationship systems within the tribe, introduces some important terms related to kinsfolk and affines, and looks at how rank and authority are exercised.
