The Changing Village

The Changing Village

(p.257) Chapter 8 The Changing Village
The Remembered Village

M.N. Srinivas

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the changes in Rampura after 1948. Among the several technological changes which had occurred between 1948 and 1952 was the availability of electric power. There was also progress in agriculture through the use of machines, and in public health. One of the important outcomes of World War II for Rampura was to bring about a greater integration of village economy and life with the national arena. With the political changes that followed, the government became more pervasive and assumed new duties and responsibilities for the well-being of the people. Significant changes also occurred in the villagers' material culture, particularly in dress and hairstyle. A long-range view of the changes that had occurred in Rampura revealed the crucial role played by the state.
