How Ignorance Hurts Us All

How Ignorance Hurts Us All

(p.200) Chapter 18 How Ignorance Hurts Us All

Srinivasa Rao

Oxford University Press

Ignorance of the truth of non-duality leads to the belief in the absolute reality of difference which in turn leads to the notion of “the other” which is basically hurtful to us all. Treating differences as real and ultimate allows legitimate ground for discrimination against “others” especially where man-made differences like nationality and religion are involved. Discrimination is not good for anyone and it hurts us all alike. Love, compassion, charity, truthfulness and all other virtues are possible only when we no more look upon other people as absolutely different from ourselves. If we do not feel that others are different from us, it automatically becomes impossible for us to hate, cheat or hurt them. A really moral and virtuous way of life can be soundly grounded only in a belief in non-duality.

Keywords:   discrimination, “the other”, ignorance, non-duality, absolute reality
