Compared to the Church and his family, the nation did not bring about that strong an influence on Wilfred Owen. The Great War was a war between nations, and since Wilfred Owen signed up as a soldier in the army, he was required to serve the empire and the nation. His priorities became apparent as he stated that he would be fighting more for English literature than for the nation. During that time, many believed that Britain was the greatest nation on earth as it had not been known to lose any wars so far. As such, British patrionism was very deep as it spread out evenly across various social classes. The version of patrionism promoted by Ruskin involved supremacy as the national destiny, while Kipling focused more on the imperial workforce.
