(p.79) 3 Patriarchy
The Chansons de Geste in the Age of Romance

Because families are perceived to be the unit par excellence, they may also be characterized as a source of meaning or as an integral factor of social organization because of how they are able to coordinate the interaction of desire and dominance and inhibition and drive. Since the book has already proven that the chansons de geste do not concentrate on all-male communities and that they also introduce the ‘poetics of gift’, which considers ambiguity and irony in the context of relations between persons, it can be established that writings within this genre are not semantically monolithic. This chapter looks into patriarchy, or the authority and dominance of the father, and how this aspect of social structure is incorporated into these poems.

Keywords:   families, social organization, social structure, father, dominance, authority, patriarchy
