The Chansons de Geste in the Age of Romance

Sarah Kay

Oxford University Press

Although we may have already been able to explain how the chanson de geste, during the rise of romance, was able to take on various ideologies of social order that may be associated with a certain narrative ‘truth’, this truth may no longer be dominated by fathers, hierarchs, brothers, and other such figures. As competing narratives arise, we attempt to look into how such occurrences may result in characters from these poems being classified either as allies or as enemies. This chapter attempts to discuss how the former may refer to counternarrative agents or to characters who are perceived as marginally traditional, and how the latter refers to characters who choose to side with outsiders instead of with their own people.

Keywords:   truth, competing narratives, allies, counternarrative agents, enemies, outsiders
