The Poetics of the Gift and the Problems of Men
The Poetics of the Gift and the Problems of Men
Strathern asserts that because the gift may be attributed to the person, the gift is viewed to be gendered. That said, probably the most typical gift may be that of a person, particularly wherein a woman is passed on as a gift from one social group to another. This chapter refocuses on the notion of ‘gift’ introduced in Chapter 1 and examines how the conceptions of gift and commodity as elements of arriving at a certain truth are used in the chansons de geste to accentuate their role as critics in a society that may be undergoing disbanding. The chansons de geste may be, as satirical texts, utilized to convey hostility, reservation, and even to observe male loyalties. This chapter will make use of two different approaches – looking into how a chanson de geste is incorporated within the fictional framework of another, and examining intertextual linkages.
