(p.23) 2 The Fasti as a Source for Women's Participation in Roman Cult
Ovid's Fasti

Elaine Fantham

Oxford University Press

This chapter considers the Fasti as a source for women’s participation in Roman cult. Collective supplications, private prayers and offerings, rites associated with chastity and fertility, the ritual of lavatio, the classification of women into matrons, virgins and prostitutes for the cult of Venus, and the poet’s instructions for women on proper behaviour as worshippers, are discussed. The chapter shows how Ovid, with his selection of festivals concerning women, has designed his text to frame his narratives with tributes to the Augustan moral and social ideology for women embodied in the public acts of Livia, the ‘first woman in Rome’.
