The Moment of Truth

The Moment of Truth

(p.177) 8 The Moment of Truth
The Mask of the Prophet

Andrew Martin

Oxford University Press

The ultimate goal of Vernian narratives is a final reckoning, a day of judgement in which everything is revealed once and for all, that moment of truth promised by the Masked Prophet when he can at last remove his mask. This chapter discusses Verne's Sans dessus dessous which may be loosely translated as ‘No More Ups and Downs’ or ‘An End to Inversion’, referring to straightening out the tilt in the earth's axis by means of a massive explosion. This chapter also argues that Nemo, Robur, Forr, Kin-Fo, Kaw-djer, Sofr-aï-Sr, characters from the different texts of Verne, are all in their various ways prophets of circularity and the end of linearity, of the end of the end, the recurrence of revolt.
