Stanhope's Liberalism

Stanhope's Liberalism

(p.144) 8 Stanhope's Liberalism
Bentham, Byron, and Greece

F. Rosen

Oxford University Press

Leicester Stanhope's involvement with Greece continued in England, and he became a major figure in the controversies surrounding the Greek loans and the Greek loan scandal in 1826. However, his most enduring campaign in his later years was for temperance, and he became an untiring advocate of the introduction of a Maine-Law into Britain. Stanhope's reputation today is based almost wholly on his involvement in the struggle for Greek independence, though he is usually mentioned as an important advocate of liberty of the press in histories of British rule in India. Nevertheless, with regard to Greece, he is known almost entirely as a fervent disciple of Jeremy Bentham. This chapter explores Stanhope's liberalism and his relationship to Bentham.
