As far as Fox retained an interest in politics after 1794, it lay in a continuing concern for France and the possibilities of a peace. He never shifted from the view that the war had been unnecessary, or that a peace was always available. Old friendships survived the bright hopes that were lost in the violence of the Terror. Having once described the men of 1789 as the French descendants of the Whigs of 1688, Fox continued to find traces of Whiggery in the Directory, with the young Bonaparte being cast as the Duke of Marlborough. As first Talleyrand and then Lafayette returned to active politics, so the Foxite connections in Paris once again blossomed. A reciprocity of political values was recognized by these men across the years.
