Lord Grey 1764–1845

E. A. Smith

Oxford University Press

The last six years of Grey's life were mainly spent at Howick. After Henry's resignation from the government Grey no longer felt the same degree of personal involvement, though he continued through newspapers and visitors to keep in touch and express his opinions. Grey's health began to decline in 1843. An illness in the summer, possibly a slight stroke, accompanied by deterioration in his speech and permanent damage to his eyesight, left him in low spirits. His enforced inactivity led to problems with circulation in his legs. As time went on the flesh of his foot began to decay, exposing the bone and this suggested gangrene. On 17 July 1845 he lapsed into a coma and died peacefully at ten minutes past eight. He was buried in the church at Howick on 26 July, his funeral attended only by his family and close friends and labourers from the state.
