This chapter is concerned with the period just before and after 1688, when Puritanism entered into a twilight period and began to take on the shape and colour which was to mark eighteenth-century Dissent. Puritans found it difficult to turn away from the concept of a state church establishment, for this was part of their own basic assumptions and convictions. The ‘twilight’ of Puritanism came when the ideal of a committed lifestyle remained but it was recognized that the hope of a united church had gone, and the various groupings within the Puritan spectrum began to develop their own institutions in the light of that fact.
