The punishment of transportation was considered an innovative step in the administration of justice in Britain, as it appeared to be the perfect intermediate punishment between capital punishment and lesser sanctions such as whipping and branding. It became an alternative to the existing punishment system, as it removed threatening criminals from society without resorting to the death penalty or imprisonment. Transportation offered social peace by sending criminals far away and without endangering traditional freedoms. It removed criminals from society and shifted the punishment policy away from deterrence and exhibitions of physical suffering. Transportation was criticized by some people who beleived that deterrence should be the prime purpose of punishment and they stated that it was a poor substitute for public penalties.
