This chapter presents a case study on bigamous marriage in England, focusing on the court case Muilman v. Muilman which was decided in 1748. This case involved Teresia Constantia Phillips who became known as a serial bigamist. She had five marriages and also became the mistress of at least seven rich and well-connected men. This chapter discusses her autobiography titled An Apology where she exposed the chicanery of the law, the scandalous details of her many matrimonial lawsuits, and her first clandestine marriage to a bigamist.
