This chapter focuses on the progress of arts during the Renaissance period. Developments in buildings and streets made provincial towns more attractive and sophisticated. This created an appropriate setting for a transformation in their social life. During the late 17th century, England experienced an increase in demand for high-status leisure. Several fields of the arts were developed as a result of this demand for leisure. These forms of art include the performing arts and the intellectual arts. Performing arts such as mystery plays, provincial and urban drama, and theatrical scenes became very popular during this era. On the other hand, intellectual arts also nourished on this period particularly with the development of provincial newspapers.
Keywords: arts, social life, high-status leisure, newspapers, performing arts, intellectual arts, play, drama
