The Economic Foundations

The Economic Foundations

(p.199) 8 The Economic Foundations
The English Urban Renaissance

Peter Borsay

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the socio-economic foundations of the Urban Renaissance in Britain. Two interrelated factors of economics are discussed: the flow of wealth or demand, and the means of production or supply. Commerce, agriculture, and industry flourished sharply during this period and these changed the shape of the nation's economy. The prosperity that was generated gave new flows of wealth and it reshaped a whole pattern of consumption. The products and facilities of the Urban Renaissance were luxurious in nature and the demand for high-status cultural goods depended upon surplus wealth. In addition, the emergence of a leisure and luxury industry depended upon the supply of entrepreneurial skills. These new industries paved the way for the discovery and development of several ambitious men of relatively low social background.
