Radicals and the Republic

This chapter discusses the myth of Irish social republicanism. It suggests that the militaristic philosophy of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) was given virtually undiluted expression following the rise to power within the organization of Sean Russell during the 1930s. Though Russell was court-martialled by the IRA in January 1937 for his tendency to assume unauthorized power and to ignore organizational procedure, his policy of aggressive action in Britain was adopted by the IRA in the spring of 1938. Russell was also appointed IRA chief of staff and in December 1938 his campaign against Britain proceeded with funding from the US.
