(p.209) 9 The Turning of the Tide (1813–1814)
A Man of Honour

Napoleon's disaster in Russia was a bitter and traumatic shock for the Poles; it obliterated overnight the great expectations of the early summer and in turn generated fears of a terrible war on Polish soil. Quick in assuming that Napoleon's cause had suffered an insufferable blow, and that if cornered Napoleon would sacrifice Poland first, some of the Polish ministers began to desert the French Emperor. This chapter describes the Polish wheel of fortune turning yet again, as the reasons of state now demanded some provision for an arrangement with Emperor Alexander. The conspirators approached Alexander directly with a scheme for a constitutional kingdom of Poland connected with Russia, and empowered Czartoryski to intercede and even negotiate on their behalf.
