Salisbury and the Transmission of Latin Literature

Salisbury and the Transmission of Latin Literature

(p.44) 3 Salisbury and the Transmission of Latin Literature
Scribes and Scholars at Salisbury Cathedral c. 1075–c. 1125

Teresa Webber

This chapter examines the role of Salisbury Cathedral in the transmission of Latin literature during the late 11th and early 12th centuries. The findings reveal that many of the texts copied at Salisbury circulated throughout the country and that a number of texts that were copied there seem not to have been copied elsewhere in England until much later. The evidence indicates Salisbury's independence from other English centres in the acquisition of exemplars and suggests that the Salisbury collection should not be considered as wholly representative of the kinds of collection made elsewhere in England in the century before and after the Conquest.
