Few Western Pacific islanders and fewer indigenous Australians were yet aware of Britain, and most of the few British settlers had arrived involuntarily, as transportees. In every respect, however, the nineteenth century witnessed the complete overturning of this picture. Australia's participation in Britain's wars between 1885 and 1918 measured the impressive strength of its Imperial connections. Discussion on demographics, material triumphs, leviathans, external affairs, cultural change, Australian federation, landscape, race, white labour, gender, dominion and colonies is provided.

Keywords:   Australia, Western Pacific, Britain, wars, Australian federation, white labour, gender, dominion, colonies, race
