Oligarchy and Community: The Corporate Personnel
Oligarchy and Community: The Corporate Personnel
When attempting to convey the workings of an institution as complex as the corporation we need to break away from the mundane recitation of constitutional relationships established by charter and local ordinance. Increased awareness of the practical strengths and weaknesses of urban government has been the most beneficial aspect of recent work on corporate prosopography. Rather than viewing the corporation in isolation from its urban locality, analysis of the careers of individual corporators has shown how the town hall had to compete for the attention of councillors with work-places, social venues, and homes. Scholars have tried to isolate the particular centripetal effect of corporate office holding, while balancing it against the more diffuse influences of a councillor's daily life.
