This chapter examines the condition of the French region of Aquitaine on the eve of the French Revolution. Aquitaine had enjoyed an illustrious past being one of the last great feudal duchies to be assimilated into the Kingdom of France in the mid-15th century. By the 18th century, Aquitaine had lost its autonomy and ceased to exist as a separate unit of administration. However, the notions of being Aquitains had not been erased from the people's consciousness.
