(p.235) 9 Godfrey of Fontaines—Authority, Obedience, and Resistance
The Common Good in Late Medieval Political Thought

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines Godfrey of Fontaines' scholastic notion of the common good. It notes that Godfrey chooses to follow Aquinas in drawing a close connection between metaphysical goodness in the universe and the political good of the human community. It discusses Godfrey's contribution to the debates over the legitimacy of the pope's dispensing power and over the relative merits of secular clergy and religious orders over Ad fructus uberes, which turned ‘benefit to others’, ‘common benefit’, and ‘common good’, into critical categories of ecclesiological analysis.
