By the late 1980s Reuters was very different from the often hard-pressed news agency of earlier times. It had embraced computer technology with great enthusiasm and with great reward. Reuters had always tried to keep up with the latest innovations, but in the past, the effect had been to modernize the company without really changing it. The creation of the Reuter Foundation demonstrated that, in its new affluence, Reuters was ready to accept an obligation to adopt a policy of constructive charity. Later, Julius Reuter had likewise been focused by poverty. He had kept purposeful, in the belief that eventually his electric news would find a market. And so it did. If he were to return at the end of the 20th century, he would not be surprised by the character of the company that bears his name.
