This chapter analyses the sermon delivered by Hugues de Saint-Cher, who was both prior of Saint-Jacques and twice provincial of France. One might have expected this sermon to parallel Hugues de Saint-Cher’s exegesis of the same Gospel reading in his commentary on John. In fact, aside from commonplace material, there is no such parallel in this sermon, nor in his other sermon on the same text. Hugues enumerates six reasons for commending marriage. The sermon begins with the standard text, John 2:1. Without a smooth transition, Hugues launches into the six reasons for commending marriage. It is typical of sermons in this period to link together different points in the Christian scheme of things — in this case, baptism and eternal beatitude.
