Pierre de Saint-Benoît OM
Pierre de Saint-Benoît OM
This chapter analyses the sermon delivered by Pierre de Saint-Benoit. A recurring distinction between carnal, spiritual, sacramental, and eternal marriages holds this sermon together. It should be noted that in some manuscripts the last two marriages are partially merged, so that the fourfold distinction becomes a threefold one, the third part consisting of two stages. Beneath the level of imagery, the sermon is about four kinds of bond. The animal side of man is bound to carnal concupiscence; the religious (exemplified by monks, friars, nuns, etc.) is bound to God; the Church militant is bound to Christ in the eucharist; the Church triumphant is bound to Christ in glory. The marriage image holds the structure together.
