This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to study perceptions and policy making. It explores on the role of intelligence in the response of France to the problem of Nazi Germany from early 1933 until the outbreak of the Second World War. It provides a new perspective on the national policy of France and the origins of the Second World War.
