Chapter 28 considers the Mielnik union negotiated following John Albert’s unexpected death in 1501. Negotiated between the Polish and Lithuanian councils, Mielnik established a blueprint for union that suited the interests of the narrow council elites in both realms. The chapter examines the background of the Muscovite pressure on Lithuania, and the nature of the compromise, which sought to overcome the different interpretations of the union in Poland and Lithuania. It was the price for Alexander’s election to the Polish throne, but after his election, he allied with the Lithuanian council, refusing to ratify it, and it therefore never came into force. The chapter argues that the Mielnik formula was to be influential in subsequent debates over the union.
