The Elizabethan Puritan Movement

By bringing the preaching ministry together in bodies which for some purposes were autonomous, the prophesyings necessarily had an influence on the Church's polity, and represented a small but important reform in ecclesiastical organization. When these potentialities have been recognized, it has usually been with the assumption that the exercises were Presbyterian in their tendency, or at least subversive of episcopal government. As we shall see, the truth was less simple and more intriguing. To appreciate how these preaching conferences had any bearing at all on administration and organization, we must again set the prophesyings in the wider context of Reformation Europe.
